2014 CIFC Results

Have you seen the results of this year's

Canadian Ice Fishing Championship yet?

2014 Canadian Ice Fishing Championship (CIFC) Canada’s Premier Live Release Ice Fishing Tournament
Results – February 22nd and 23rd 2014
Jackson’s Point – Lake Simcoe: The fish of Lake Simcoe once again tested the skill and patience of the 100+ ice anglers participating in the 20th Annual CIFC.  The 2 day live release tournament was staged at Jackson’s Point boat launch in the Town of Georgina, on the south shore of Lake Simcoe.  As in years past, the 240.000 M2 zones were in 2 different water depths.  Day One saw the ice anglers fishing in depths from 10 to 26 feet, (3 to 8 meters) east of the boat launch.  The Day Two fishing zone was north of Jackson’s Point in 50+ feet (20 meters) of water.
  • This year saw participants from as far away as Edmonton Alberta, State of Michigan and all corners of North and Central Ontario.  Many of the teams were fishing their first competitive tournament.
  • During the CIFC not only do the winners receive thousands of dollars in products but also 80% of the entry fee monies are paid out to the winning teams. This year’s total of $11,420 cash was paid out to the top 15 teams, in addition to over $26,000 in donated product given to both winners as well as all participants of the Championship.
  • February 22nd and 23rd saw typical February winter patterns blow in that challenged the tournament anglers to determine their winning fishing technique.
  • The team of Armando and Fred DiMartino chose their technique successfully as they took home the first place prizes, the coveted CIFC Gold Cup along with the prestigious title of 2014 Canadian Ice Fishing Champions.
This is Armando and Fred’s second time atop the podium at the CIFC.  What’s their secret??? We may never know, but learning what the fish are feeding on at this time of year and presenting lures in such a way that enables the fish the opportunity to inhale that lure are vital - plus locating fish in the zone, in a hurry, will increase one’s ability to catch them. These are the principles to becoming a successful ice angler during hard water conditions that need to become greatly accelerated during a tournament setting.

This year’s Day One Heaviest Perch Lunker Pool paid out $640 for a 1.015 pound fish caught by Matt Mitchell.
Day Two Longest Lunker Pool Fish Winner was Lance Boyd for a 31” Lake Trout, netting Lance a Cool $700.
The closing ceremonies held at the Sutton Kin Community Hall ended with ice anglers receiving their winning hardware & prizes.

The CIFC organizers included an economic impact study questionnaire for all anglers to fill out. One of the interesting facts from this National Championship was that the CIFC learned that the competitors spent in excess of $110,000 within the local region prior to and during the CIFC. Another $16,000 was spent during their travels.

The CIFC organization is already planning for the 2015 event and is looking forward to bringing the CIFC into its 3rd decade. “The Canadian Ice Fishing Championship will truly become a national event that Canadian Ice Anglers will be proud to compete in” Rosa Sharpe, Owner and President of the CIFC, stated during the presentations.

The wiggle fish can’t resist - Rapala!!

Using a shoemaker’s knife and some sandpaper,  Lauri Rapala created his first successful lure from cork in 1936.  Tinfoil from chocolate bars formed the lure’s outer surface and melted photographic negatives fashioned the protective coating.

Today, Rapala lures are still hand-tuned and tank-tested to swim perfectly right out of the box.

Thank you Rapala for sponsoring the 20th Annual Canadian Ice FishingChampionship!

Congratulations Jamie Blackburn Winner of CIFC 2014 Contest

Jamie of Sackville, Nova Scotia is the weekly winner of our 2nd CIFC 2014 ENTER TO WIN CONTEST!!

Fishing for as long as he can remember, for over 35 years, Jamie has fished many lakes throughout Nova Scotia.  He hooks brook trout in the spring, small mouth bass in the summer and brook trout, white and yellow perch, rainbow smelt and pickerel in the winter months during ice fishing season.

"I'm also on the B.O.D. for Canadian Association of Smallmouth Anglers (CASA), and host an Ice fishing event in February each year to raise funds for CASA.  The event which takes place on a small lake called Fish Lake is in it's fourth year."

Jamie fishes with family and friends and for the past few years has taken his nine year daughter with him and "she loves it".   This past Sunday Jamie had his daughter went out for an ice fish and she didn't mind being the only girl.  "She will be helping me at the ice fishing tournament in February."

Jamie is not the only lucky winner in the family.  Recently his 9 year old daughter was also entered into a contest "She Loves to Fish" and she was a winner, receiving a pink Rapala hat.

Jamie receives prizes courtesy of our generous sponsors; HT, Berkley's, Lucky Strike, and Town of Georgina.

Without our CIFC sponsors we wouldn't have the opportunity to offer contests such as these.

There are still two more chances to enter our contest with a winner chosen once each week for the next two weeks.  Head on over to our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/Canadian.Ice.Fishing.Championship to Like our Page and complete the ballot.  You could be the next person we contact to Congratulate!!

Congratulations Michal Bialy CIFC 2014 Contest Winner!

It is our pleasure to announce that Michal Bialy of Markham, Ontario has been selected as the winner of our week one CIFC 2014 ENTER TO WIN contest.

Michal has lived in Markham for most of his life and has been fishing since he could barely speak.  He and his father have camped and fished in and around the Grundy Lake area to Algonquin and even Temagami.  They have also portaged with kayaks to fish those lakes which are inaccessible to highways.

Their catch has "included northern pike, bass, walleye and the odd trout when season comes.  Also, who doesn't love eating perch in the winter time!"

Michal and his friend fish almost every week or whenever their work and school schedules allow for it.

Congratulations Michal!!

Thank you to our generous sponsors who donated the prize items for 2014
Lucky Strike, HT Fishing, Berkley's, Town of Georgina

We would also like to thank all of our participants for entering our contest and hope that you will try again as there are still 2 more weeks to enter after this week.
